Church Corruption

Briar Cliff Manor, in which season two is set, is an asylum owned by the Catholic church and operated by Monsignor Howard and various nuns, such as Sister Jude and Sister Mary Eunice. It does not take long before it is apparent that these religious figures are not treating their patients well and are certainly not following the ways in which a good Chrisitan should live. But this is only the beginning of the corrupt ways carried out by the staff of Briar Cliff Manor. This corruption is largely uncovered by journalist and later patient, Lana Winters. It is revealed that the poor treatment of patients not only involved physical abuse but in some cases, patients were framed for murder by the resident psychologist and were being treated as test subjects for resident doctor, Arthur Arden, who was more mad scientist than a doctor ("Madness Ends") . Upon her release from Briar Cliff, Lana produces a documentary on the asylum which led to its closure and years later , she releases a book exposing the wrongdoings and neglectful care of Howard, who had become Cardinal Howard by then. ("Madness Ends")

The corruption of the staff at Briar Cliff Manor can be analysed as a criticism of the Catholic church and the corruption that has historically occurred in secrecy. As an institution, the church has been criticised for its greed and for ignoring the violence, assault, and wrongdoing that was occurring at the hands of their own priests and others in their parishes. The neglect to help those who were and are being actively harmed by those in the church is a common complaint and issue many have with religious institutions. The example of Cardinal Howard ignoring the poor treatment of his patients and even participating in the violence that occurred at the asylum further illustrates one of the biggest problems within the Catholic Church. The events that took place in the Asylum firmly display one of the major criticisms this show has about religion.
