The Angel of Death

Shachath is one of the most direct comparisons to a biblical character in the whole series. Shachath appears in season two, Asylum, and is also known as the angel of death. She appears to many of the main characters in season two, Asylum, and offers help in the form of the kiss of death to those who are ill and dying of those who wish to die. Main characters such as Sister Jude, who was discussed on the previous page, and Lana Winters, a reporter investigating the poor treatment of patients at the manor, are visited by the angel in times of darkness but both overcome their fears and refuse the kiss of death. Lana is visited when she is kidnapped, raped, and tortured by the serial killer, Bloody Face, who is one of the season's main villains (Dark Cousins). When Shachath offers Lana the kiss of death she almost accepts until she realises she has nothing to lose by fighting back and tries to, and succeeds, to escape (Dark Cousins). The angel of death also appears to monsignor Howard, the head of the Briar Cliff Asylum, when one of the nuns who works for him is possessed. Shachath warns him of the dangers associated with Sister Mary Eunice's possession in hopes that he will attempt to save them from the demon. Shachath is one of the purest, good characters in the whole series and certainly in this season. She is a benevolent religious figure that helps lead those in suffering to comfort and peace.

In Christianity, there is no angel that is specifically referred to as the angel of death, but there are angels that help those who are dying and do so under the archangel, Michael's supervision. (Hopler). Both Shachath and the angels under Michael's supervision help guide those they visit to the afterlife and provide them with comfort in doing so. Death is viewed as a holy event for Christians and therefore the presence of the angel, who will comfort you and guide you to the afterlife, is almost expected (Hopler). These similarities between characters prove that Shachath is one of the most direct influences of a biblical character on an American Horror Story character. Both Shachath and Archangel Micheals angels have a similar job and are angels of guidance in a time of death.
